Gumbel never gave much thought about breaking any color barriers on Today. “That’s flattering for Joe to say that,” he said in a 2002 interview. “I never looked at it that way, to be honest. I guess most TV jobs that I have held, by virtue of timing, I’ve always kind of been the first. I was the first black host of a network sports program. So that wasn’t something that occurred to me at the time.” Gumbel remembered being more concerned about the resistance he received from NBC News. “There was a certain degree of snobbery,” he recalled. “It was like, ‘How on Earth can you take a jock and put him in a position as host of the Today program? How is that possible? When you have all these other wonderful people who are applying for the job, with wonderful news credentials? How on Earth could you do this?’ And that’s the way a lot of people felt. I mean there was talk of people refusing to do reports for us; other people who would refuse to talk to me on the air. It was pretty ugly.”
